Lawnton State School

At Lawnton State School we dream big and have a philosophy that all our students, regardless of circumstances, are expected to aim and achieve high. Today Trish you were the epitome of grace and dignity and all things that Lawnton hold true. Our students were fascinated with your talk today and the positive way you promoted success on all levels and under all circumstances.

Our Facebook page is buzzing with excited parents and children  sharing your journey and with one of our little year 1 students telling him mum, “see I can do it mum, Trish said there is no such word as “Can’t”   You have made such a positive impact on all our community with sharing your story.

I love how  both you and Trevor gave your time so freely to stay back with the myriad of students wanting you to draw for them and just be with you.

We have officially made you a Lawnton legend and would love to have you back to our school on our “Dream Big” afternoons where we ask or community to share stories with our students to inspire them to reach for the stars.

Thank you again, you have changed someone’s world today.

Principal, Lawnton State School

Good evening Trish and Trevor,

I just wanted to write and say a huge thank you to you both for coming to our school today and speaking with our community. Your message was so positive and powerful – and has had a big impact with our students and staff alike. At our school we are endeavouring to create leaders, and what better way to do this than to have someone who is an inspirational leader stand before our students and tell them their story of persistence, perseverance, courage and resilience. In speaking with our children today, I truly believe that you have altered the trajectory for some of our little guys in a positive and significant way… an outcome you may never get to hear about until 20 years from now – or maybe ever… but your message will resonate throughout their stories as they live their own lives and influence others in the way that you have influenced them. Just as your friend who was a teacher inspired you all those years ago by asking you to come to her school – you coming to speak at our school will no doubt have that very same impact.

On a personal note, meeting both you and Trevor has reaffirmed to me that there are still genuine and good people in the world, and that as a school we are not alone in trying to make tomorrow a better place for our kids. This has lifted me and has solidified my resolve that we can make a real difference in lives. Thank you.

Now we do things a little bit differently at our school compared to everywhere else that you might have been – and we are big believers in things happening at our school for a reason… so as we mentioned today you are now both officially adopted by our school community and are part of our Lawnton State School family. We viewed today as the start of a beautiful friendship and look forward to seeing how we will continue to cross paths along the way… this is non optional. J

I have included below a quick snip off our school’s Facebook page from a post that was put up earlier… Never underestimate the difference one person with a story to tell can make or where their influence might end!

Thank you again and we look forward to catching up again soon.

Warm regards,

Teacher, Lawnton School.

Feedback from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Barcaldine

Thank you to St. Joseph’s school for allowing me to use this feedback and photos from my visit to their school.

On Wednesday we had a visit from Trish Jackson who is a motivational speaker. Trish was born with no arms but that has not stopped her from achieving great things in her life. You can find out more about Trish by visiting her website: http://footsiephotos.com/

Trish spoke to all of the students as part of our buddy activities in rotations, which was very good timing as we have been doing some work around resilience during these sessions. Trish had lots of valuable messages for us. She showed us photos to demonstrate how she goes about daily activities and even hobbies such as fishing. Trish took the time to write every child’s name using her feet as a keepsake for us. After the talk, we reflected on what we took from the talk and each student came up with a goal that they are going to try really hard to work on over the next week. I thought I would share them with you so that you can provide your child with some gentle encouragement!

Our goals:

Matilda – Don’t give up

Bryce  – I will try my hardest

Ben – I will treat others the way I want to be treated

Tim – I will try my hardest in everything

Korbin – I will help people

Reuben – I will never give up and try my hardest

Mia – I will think positively instead of negatively

Bryson – I will never give up

Riley – I won’t laugh at people even if they are different to me

Enzo – I will never give up even if I don’t think I will make it

Cooper – Don’t give up

Joseph – I will show pride and confidence in what I’m doing

Edith – I will put my best effort into maths

Sarah – I will always have a go

Roko – I will try my best because if I do I will succeed

Beau – I will treat people kindly even if they are different

Emma – I won’t judge people by what they look like

Brayden – Don’t give up

Sol – I will help people when they fall over

Reannon – I will always try my hardest

Bryce – I will help other people tidy up

Ellie – I won’t judge people by how they look

Minimbah school with Mark Ryan MP.

This week I spoke to the grade 6’s at Minimbah State school. I was honoured to have up on the stage with me Mark Ryan MP.  Mark showed us what a good sport he is, by participating in trying to write with his feet like I do. In my talks I usually get the students to have a go at writing with their feet, it is great fun.

I was trying to help Mark by holding the paper still.

This is what Mark wrote “Thanks Trish”. A great effort by Mark but had he been secretly practicing?

I have just come back from doing two school talks in the Toowoomba region totaling nearly 200 students all up. I also spoke to the Lockyer Valley Rotary club, where I had a lovely evening with the club and they thoroughly enjoyed my talk and they said, it is one of the best presentations that they had had. I can’t thank them enough for such high praise.
Unfortunately I was to do two more school talks but I lost my voice so I will have to reschedule the schools when I get my voice back.

Thank you card from Ingham State School.

I really enjoyed my talk at this school and was honoured that they asked me to judge their photographic competition that they had running.

I must say I was totally impressed with the quality of the photographs that the students had taken. Choosing a first, second and third was a very difficult task. There is some awesome talent coming through from this school..

Feedback from Ayr State High School.

Trish,

I just wanted to thank you both for coming to share your time with us at Ayr High.

In a world where students are used to being told what to do and how to do it, your story is appealing because it is a life story of overcoming challenges, and many young people feel they are facing challenges. It was clear from the comments I heard between students as they walked out that they had been impacted by what they heard.

Your key messages are really on point for young people. The message of pursuing our goals and dreams despite adversity and barriers is never more real than when said by someone who has lived their life that way. I think the inspiration that follows is that it all of us can face our challenges and never give-up. You are a living walking example of why we all need to appreciate and accept difference. It is often those differences that create opportunities for our strengths.

I wish you all the best as you continue to travel and speak. I’m sure others will be inspired by you as our students were.

Warmest thanks,

Andrew Ballin
